m Day

A few women have lucked into a husband who knows just the perfect gift for every occasion. The rest of us have husbands who try hard, but miss the mark by miles, or who would rather not have to give at all … if they even manage to remember the occasion, that is. This year, maybe the answer is to let them off the hook.

We’ve compiled a list of 10 gifts to consider giving yourself this Mother’s Day, and you can tell your husband that some of them are even free. Most husbands like free.

Ridding your body of stress and tension will help make you a happier, healthier, more relaxed mom and wife, so the first few gifts are dedicated to this worthy cause.

1 Walk in the Park
Exercise is a great way to release stress and re-energize. This is one of the freebies, but hubby will need to take over childcare so you can take the time to focus on yourself and get healthy.

2 Aerobics or Yoga Class Membership

Same benefits as above, and although this one comes with a price tag, it also comes with a chance to socialize, which is great for your mental health as well.

3 Professional Massage
A monthly or weekly laying on of hands can go a long way toward a better sense of well-being.

4 Play Ball
Kids aren’t the only ones who benefit from sports involvement. Soccer, golf, tennis, bowling — join a league. Get out the family calendar and find a way to make it happen. Your health and happiness is important, too!

We all need a strong support system to help us through difficult times and just to make day-to-day life a little more enjoyable.

5 Weekly Mom’s Night Out
Getting together with friends or family once a week gives you some much needed adult time to connect with others. This one could be free, depending on what the group decides to do.

6 Parenting Group Membership
Christian Parenting Playgroup and Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) are just a couple of the many options available in the area that give moms a chance to socialize while their children play together.

7 Couple’s Night Out
Most likely you have friends with kids. Make plans for the four of you to get together weekly and split the cost of a babysitter. This gives you time with hubby and a chance to socialize with others as well.

Many moms report that they lose themselves in their marriage and parenting. These final options are dedicated to rediscovering the essence of you.

8 Reading Time
Reawaken your sense of fantasy with a juicy novel or explore your inner world with a spiritual read. If your kids are old enough, everyone can get out a book and read for a few minutes a couple times a day. If they are too small, read while they nap or for a few minutes after they go to bed.

9 Special Interest Classes
Revisit an old pasttime or explore a new hoppy by taking classes. Art, photography, astronomy, scrapbooking — delving into your individual interests can help you remember the old you or discover a new one.

10 Teach

Reconnect with your love of an activity by teaching it. Did you love softball as a kid? Offer to help coach your daughter’s team. Do you love needlework? Offer to teach your friends or their children.

Jewelry won’t help you decompress, and we all eat out too often these days, so this year, give your hubby a holiday off, and give yourself a much needed and much deserved gift for Mother’s Day.
