If your family has sights set on fun in the sun this summer, now is the time to stop daydreaming and start planning. Here is a checklist to help streamline the process. Be sure to include the kids in the preparations. Pitching-in will give them a sense of responsibility and clue them into the work that comes along with hitting the road.

Month or More before:
Update passports and travel club memberships
Ask for vacation days at work
Make reservations
Schedule boarding for pets
Make packing and to-do lists

Two or Three Weeks before:
Schedule tasks from to-do list
Remind bosses and coworkers of vacation

One Week before:
Ask neighbors to watch house
Complete items from to-do list:
• Launder clothes
• Service and wash car
• Stop mail and paper
• Shop for sunscreen and other incidentals
• Start packing suitcases
• Program the GPS
• Print off check-in information
• Get cash

Day before:
Complete to-do list:
• Drop pets at vet
• Water plants
• Get gas
• Pack car
• Set coffee-maker
• Get some sleep!

Day of:
Alas, some things just can’t be done ahead of time.
• Double check packing lists
• Take out trash
• Turn off water
• Unplug computers and other electronics
• Set the house lights
• Turn down the thermostat
• Set the alarm
• Put the kids in the car
• Hit the open road!
