Summer is weeks from over, but your kids are already wailing, “There’s NOTHING to do!” Kidese to English translation: “We want to do something fun with you, Mom and Dad!”
By the time July rolls
around, the kiddy pool contains
more grass than water
and the playground equipment
has reached temperatures equal
to the boiling point for
most metals. So now
what?
Here are five fun ideas to help you beat the heat and enjoy the remaining weeks of summer:
Museum
Most museums have kid-friendly
exhibits. They can learn while they play,
and best of all, the air conditioning is
free! Visit the Columbus Museum for
art activities and the Coca Cola Space
and Science Center for cosmic fun here
at home, or take a road trip and visit
one of Alabama’s or Georgia’s museums
with exhibits on just about anything,
including art, science, music, sports
and history.
Indoor
Playground
Many fast food restaurants have
indoor playgrounds so your kids can
burn off excess energy—no sunscreen
necessary. Places like Monkey Joe’s,
Battle ‘N Bounce and My Gym also offer
physical activities indoors.
Library
The library has weekly activities
for kids of all ages from tots to
teens.
Visit thecolumbuslibrary.org
or phenixcitylibrary.org and choose
from a wide array of cool educational
fun for you and the kids.
Hotel
Take the term “stay-cation” to new
levels. Check the family into a hotel for
a night or two without ever leaving
town. Choose a spot with a pool, rent
some movies and play some board
games. The kids will love the change of
scenery and you can let someone else
cook and clean.
Kitchen Sink
Yes, the kitchen sink. Sometimes the simplest
ideas are the best. Pull a stepstool or
chair up to the sink filled with water and
suds. Let your child stand at the sink and
play in the water with cups, bowls, spoons
and other safe cooking utensils. Kids love
bubbles, so be sure to use plenty of soap!
